As a flutist and conductor, I currently serve as Music Director of Rose City Flute Choir, and principal flutist with Tilikum Chamber Orchestra and Oregon Symphonic Band, perform chamber music and freelance in the Portland area. As a certified teacher in elementary and music education for over forty years, I have had extensive experience in teaching all ages—my current flute students range from elementary school age up through retirement age. I have maintained a private flute studio since 1992 and have adjudicated at both the local and state level in Solo Contests. In addition, I have worked extensively as a flute clinician in band programs throughout the Portland Metropolitan Area in both public and private schools, as well taught flute workshops nationally, including at the National Flute Association annual conventions. Also, I was the Flute Instructor at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon from 2016-2020.
With my extensive teaching experience, I use a variety of approaches and teaching techniques to customize flute lessons based on learning style and skill level. I work with a student’s strengths to create a positive atmosphere to increase enjoyment of lessons. In lessons, we work on technical skills, tone, articulation, stylistic skills, general musicianship, and expansion of musical horizons with different types of music. We strive toward success, enjoyment, and excellence in music.
All students are offered the opportunity to perform in one or two recitals per year with a professional accompanist. For school age students, this helps serve as preparation for Solo & Ensemble Festival performances.
Studio Information and Hours
My teaching studio is in my home in Southwest Portland, Oregon, about a 10 minute drive northeast of Washington Square. Current studio hours are Tuesdays, and from 9:00-noon on Saturday mornings, although other times may be available. For more information, contact Phyllis at phyllis@fabulousflute.com
My School Year Schedule Starts the first week of September.
Tuition rates for weekly lessons:
30 minutes $35.00/lesson
45 minutes $45.00/lesson
60 minutes $60.00/lesson
For less than weekly lessons, add $5 per lesson to the above lesson rates.
Information on Summer Lessons
Students continuing lessons during the summer will be given preference in my Fall Schedule.
